Maths

‘Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.’ Albert Einstein

Mathematics is a subject full of patterns. There is an unending array of fascinating connections to investigate. There are puzzles to tease over, strategies to develop and facts to learn.

Mathematics is colourful, vibrant and physical. It is not one thing but a myriad of intricately woven threads and ideas. It is in the tangible world around us and in the abstract thoughts in our mind.

Engaging in mathematics stimulates curiosity, wonder and satisfaction. The contributions mathematics has made to our society, from the mundane to the magnificent, ensure its place in the future. The children of today are our future in technology, medicine and the environment. Mathematics will be their constant companion.

At Blaise, we follow the National Curriculum. The aims of the curriculum are to ensure that all learners:

  • become fluent in basic facts such times tables and formal written calculations
  • reason mathematically, being able to prove or justify their thinking
  • solve problems by applying their mathematical knowledge

At Blaise, we aim to do this by:

  • encouraging fascination and excitement in the discovery of new concepts
  • encouraging a Growth Mindset. It is not 'I can't do it' but 'I can't do it yet'
  • using physical resources to embed concrete understanding
  • encouraging the children to search for patterns, make connections and apply the mathematical knowledge they already have
  • encouraging children to work collaboratively using mathematical language in their discussions
  • encouraging children to work independently and consider making mistakes as a positive opportunity for learning
  • broadening children’s awareness of how mathematics is used in the wider world.
