Blaise Primary School And Nursery

Creating Success. Laying foundations, thriving on challenge and believing we can.

Year 6

Welcome to the home page for year 6 -- Miss Lidstone and Miss Boyle's classes.  You'll find lots of learning here to keep you busy but, if you would like any help from the teachers, you can email school@blaiseprimaryandnurseryschool.co.uk with 6L (Miss Lidstone) or 6B (Miss Boyle) in the subject box and they will get your email.

If you're passing our school on Crow Lane for a walk, have a look for the big rainbow on the school fence. We are thinking about you everyday.

  • 6L - Some of you have the Seesaw app QR code, which will allow you to communicate with myself and other members of the class. Please share and add yourselves.
  •  6B - We have a blog on Purplemash (which can be accessed via the sharing tab at the top of the Purplemash page.) Drop by and leave a message! Alternatively, email the school to ask for your SeeSaw QR code.

As well as the learning set on here and Purplemash, please practise your spellings daily and read at least 5 times a week.

You should also be practising your times tables every day - each of you has your PiXL times table log in. Practise a times table that you know you find tricky and then play as many of the games as you want.

It is important to stay as healthy as possible during this difficult time so please tune in to Joe Wicks' YouTube channel every morning at 9am to complete a daily workout. Click here to go to his channel.

Hope to see you all soon.

Miss Lidstone and Miss Boyle

Good morning year 6. We hope you have had a lovely weekend. We've updated our page over the weekend to make it a bit easier to access. From now on, you'll find all of the instructions for the day on the right-hand side and any files you'll need on the left-hand side. We will try as much as possible to upload pdf and word formats onto here and we will also add an word version for maths and English in the 'Work' section on Purplemash. You will need to download the work, complete it (this could be drawing on top, printing and taking a photo, or writing straight onto the word document) then upload into your own work section on Purple mash - these will always be separate from the 2dos that we will also set for you.

English:

There are 5 GPS challenge mats for you to complete! Good luck!

If you finish, why not carry on with your booklet from yesterday (there was lots to get through) or write some of your own GPS test style questions and challenge the people in your household.

Maths:

Today is all about multiplication. There are 2 Power Points again, a selection of arithmetic and also a reasoning and problem solving booklet to work through. Remember your times tables are one of THE most important skills you will need for secondary school and then beyond! Please please please keep practising! All answers are attached for you to mark.

Please note: answers to PDF file questions can be typed onto a separate word document or written down on paper.

Maths:

Over the next few days we'll be recapping our methods for the four operations. Today it's addition. I have attached 2 power points, one for decimals and one for column addition so feel free to go through those if you need a reminder of our methods. There are then a mixture of arithmetic questions (you can just pick one file or do all of them if you like - its up to you!) and a reasoning booklet to work through. I have also attached the answers with each this time for you to mark yourselves.

Maths:

This week in maths, we will finish off our work on ratio and then begin to recap some areas of number. Today, we'll be looking at calculating scale factors.

Please watch Lesson 1 - Step 6 - Calculating Scale factors here

In this step you will learn to find scale factors when given similar shapes. You will need to remember that ‘similar’ in mathematics means that one shape is an exact enlargement of the other, not just they have
some common properties.
You will also need to use multiplication and division facts to calculate missing information and scale factors.

Theme:

2do's set on Purple Mash based around electricity:

Safety in the home

Match the pairs (symbols)

Electrical or not? (x2)

Happy Friday Year 6!

English - Reading and GPS:

Log into Purplemash to complete the Reading Quiz booklet.

Don't forget that these are different to your '2do's' and must be found in the 'work' section under class '6B or 6L.'

The files on the left will help you with your learning on Purplemash.

Maths:

Please watch the lesson 5 video here then log in to Purple Mash and complete the sheet in the Work section - you can always write or draw your answers onto a separate piece of paper and upload a photograph of it into your work section.

In this final lesson on ratio, you will enlarge shapes to make them 2 or 3 times as big. You will learn the term “scale factor” as the name for this process. You should be able to draw 2-D shapes on a grid to a given scale factor and be able to use vocabulary, such as, “Shape A is three times as big as shape B”.

Maths:

Good morning. Please watch the lesson 4 video here then log in to Purple Mash and complete the worksheet. You'll find the sheet in the 'Work' section on the website.

You will be building on your knowledge of ratios and begin to calculate ratios. You'll answer worded questions in the form of for every… there are …’ and you'll need to be able to find both a part and a whole.

You can draw bar models to represent the problems, and clearly label the information you have been given and what you want to calculate.

Maths:

Good morning everyone. Please watch the lesson 3 video here then log in to Purple Mash and complete the worksheet as best you can. You'll find the worksheet in the 'Work' section.

In this lesson, you'll be properly using the colon notation as the ratio symbol, and continue to link this with the language 'for every..., there are...'

You will need to read ratios e.g. 3 ∶ 5 as “three to five” and understand that the notation relates to the order of parts. For example, ‘For every 3 bananas there are 2 apples would be the same as 3∶2 and for every 2 apples there are 3 bananas would be the same as 2∶3.

Theme - Geography:

  • Junk model challenge! Over the next week, why not use bits and bobs lying around your house or garden, recycling, rubbish and other junk to create your own rainforest animal or rainforest scene? You could use cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, grass, leaves, sticks and twigs, and anything else you can think of. When you have finished, take a photo and either post on SeeSaw (write to me on our year 6 blog on Purplemash for the log in) or email to the school office who will pass onto me.

English:

Log into Purplemash to complete:

A reading comprehension based on a non-fiction text about running, a poem about nature and a fictional story about a young girl called Sabryna.

See to the left for details on how to download work from Purplemash and how to upload it for marking and feedback.

 Maths:

Please watch the lesson 2 video here then complete the worksheet I have made for you in Purple Mash. Again, I have placed it in the 'Work' section. I have updated the downloading and uploading instructions for Purple Mash and put them below.

A mistake often made is a ratio 1 ∶ 2 is the same as a fraction of 1/2. For this lesson, try to use objects and diagrams to compare ratios and fractions.

Theme - Geography

Use all of the information you have learnt about the rainforest to write an informative leaflet 2do set on Purplemash!

English:

Log into Purplemash to complete:

  • A reading comprehension (based around the armed forces.)
  • Prefix and suffix activity
  • Prefix and suffix wordsearch.

Your learning is saved as a word document that you will find in your 'Work' section - not your '2do' section.  You will need to click on your class folder on the left hand side, and select the English home learning folder. You can then download, complete the sheet and then upload back into your work section. I have put some instructions of how to do that below.

 Maths:

Your maths this week will continue to be based around ratio and proportion. This will be new to those of you who couldn't make it into school last week and will be good revision for those that did.

There is a video to watch here (lesson 1)  then please complete the worksheet I have made for you in purple mash. It is a word document that you will find in your 'Work' section - not your '2do' section. You will need to click on your class folder on the left hand side, and select the maths home learning folder. You can then download, complete the sheet and then upload back into your work section. I have put some instructions of how to do that below.

Please can you all access the PiXL times table app every day - it's free to download if you haven't already got it. Choose any of the activities that you want to play. We'll be keeping an eye on your results and let you know which specific times tables we need to work on as a year group.

6L - make sure you have also accessed the seesaw app - I'm hoping the children that were in school on Friday will be able to share it with those that weren't. This way if you are stuck with any of the work, you will be able to write a longer message to me and I will help where I can.

Theme - Geography:

Research as much about Fair Trade as you can. What is Fair Trade? What does it mean? The following websites have lots of information.

https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/fair-trade

https://www.funkidslive.com/learn/environment/f-is-for-fairtrade/#

https://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/resource/make-bananas-fair-a-film-for-schools/

https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/fair-trade/476256

Then, log into PurpleMash and create your own leaflet explaining what Fair Trade is, why it is important and give as much information as you can. Make it colourful with lots of interesting information.
