Blaise Primary School Calculation Policy

 

 Vision

 

The key aims of this document are for children to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • reason mathematically
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems. 

 

At Blaise Primary School we believe that children require a conceptual understanding of maths coupled with procedural fluency in order to achieve their full potential.  These should be developed alongside one another. 

 

The use of this document should be dynamic.  It should be used alongside the programme of study for the relevant year group and key stage in order to provide targeted provision to allow every child to make progress.  The calculation policy is not designed to be used in a step-by-step manner.  It should be used in a flexible way as a support document to aid children’s development in calculation.  This is why year groups have not been specified.    

 

The calculations contained within the document can be used to solve numerical problems as well as integer scaling problems, measures, statistics and fractions.
